Thea Finch, or better known by Thea (born March 31, 1989) is a an English singer-songwriter.
early life
Thea was born in London, England. Her mother is a music teacher at a private school and her father is a cardiologist. Thea and her mother briefly moved to Dublin, Ireland when Thea was fourteen for a year to help care for her terminally ill grandmother. It's there that Thea said she truly saw how passionate her mother's family was about music and decided to pursue it for a career. Thea has an older brother, William, and a younger brother, George. She said growing up they were very close.
career
Graduating from the BRIT school in 2006 with a focus in music and vocals, Thea didn't initially dive into her career. She had a few songs up on Myspace, unexpectedly discovered by a record executive. Once a record deal had been offered, Thea began recording her first album, 19. The album entered the british charts at number one, with "Hometown Glory" as its first single. Following the release of 19 came mutliple breakthrough artist awards. Also an offer from Columbia Records so that Thea could record and release her album in the United States. At the 51st Annual Grammy Awards in February 2009, Thea won the award for Best New Artist, in addition to the award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "Chasing Pavements", which was also nominated for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. She performed a small North American tour, which she canceled halfway through because she said she was seriously ill. It was later revealed Thea was battling an alcohol problem.
Thea's second album, 21, was released in 2011 in both the UK and US. She openly admits that the album was written primarly after the break-up of her longtime boyfriend. The album's first two singles, "Someone Like You" and "Rolling in the Deep" both entered the top 5 of the UK singles chart, a feat not known since The Beatles had done it in 1964. After a sold out North American and European tour, Thea took another break to once again manage her "silly little drinking problem", making her debit at the 2012 Grammy Awards. Thea took home the Grammy for all six categories she was nominated for.
In the summer of 2015, her record label confirmed that Thea was recording for a third album. Any quotes coming from Thea regarding the third album mentioned her calling it a "make up record", as opposed to the break-up album of 25. The first single, "Hello", was released on October 23rd and instantly became the most watched video on Vevo, even breaking Taylor Swift's record. On November 27th, 25 debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and became the fastest selling album in UK chart history with over 800,000 copies sold in its first week. The album debuted at number one in the US where it sold a record-breaking 3.38 million copies in its first week.
Thea's first tour since 2011 began in North America in Missouri on July 5th. She has been steadily touring since.
personal life
Thea's very close to her family, citing that she uses them as her crutch when she's not feeling herself. Most notably, she has been rather open about her troubles with drinking. "I drink to drown out all of the bad that I think I have in my life. I realise I don't have it nearly anywhere as bad as some, and it makes me feel worse, so I drink to feel better. But it always works out that you don't feel much better after ten rum and cokes, yeah?" She's never confirmed that she has been in rehab for drinking, but many speculate that the reason she has canceled tours and disappeared for long amounts of time can be due to that.
Thea also keeps her relationships heavily under wraps. She says she doesn't want those she writes her music about to be bombarded with her choices. She's been linked to a few actors, but none have been confirmed.
Thea resides in Los Angeles, with her dog, Anastasia.
media perception
Thea is heavily monitored by the media, mostly for her drinking problem that coincides with her great success. She's never been labeled as a diva, or having the personality of someone other than a commoner from London. She keeps it very real, and down to earth. At her shows and in her interviews she's very open. Though she does tend to keep her mouth shut about her family and her relationships. She does get criticized for being open about not having any desire to be a "performer". She constantly makes fun of other singers who tend to have a bunch of flashy dance routines. But says she likes that's what makes her different from her fellow musicians.
